NUSAN is a Bawean concept restaurant that celebrates and preserves the traditional culture and heritage of the Bawean community through modernity. By re-introducing the familiar traditional dishes that our Bawean elders have prepared for generations, we get to appreciate the food culture through collective storytelling.
The Origin
For this project, hearing New Asian Identity as a project category began as a catalyst for NUSAN. I wanted a project that allows me to delve deep into my unique dual-ethnicity, and to be able to create a brand that translates that.
Brand Identity
I wanted to celebrate Bawean through culinary, as it is a common interest among many Asians. Creating a unique cultural restaurant allows me to have freedom in the art direction, hence it is important to me to set the right identity for NUSAN.

Process of creating a logo for NUSAN

Logo
The brand name NUSAN (pronounced as noo-sun) has the word 'san' which sounds like the sun. With that I wanted to incorporate the visual of the sun into the logo. The image above demonstrate the process of the beginning of the logo making to the end. Ultimately, after much research, I incorporated the shape of a boat called 'golekan' which was commonly used by the Bawean sailors. The two ends of the boat has this sharp arch pointing upwards, which I thought would be interesting to incorporate into the logo.
